Driver Knowledge School

In order to become a Taxi Driver, Hackney or Private Hire, you must gain a license which is issued by the local council. The procedure for getting both is the same.

You will be required to pass an Advanced Driving Standards Agency test and to pass two Knowledge tests and one Route test. For this, the local council recommends that you enroll in to a Driver Knowledge School.

At Brighton & Hove Radio Cabs we are proud to run our own 'in-house' Knowledge School, which is operated by one of our long-serving taxi drivers. He is a very capable and competent tutor who will teach potential taxi drivers all they need to know to get them through the Knowledge and Route tests, and is on hand to answer any questions regarding becoming a taxi driver.

The Knowledge Tests of Brighton & Hove is split into two parts:

Brighton consists of 50 random questions on the roads in Brighton and 10 places of interest.

Hove consists of 50 random questions on the roads in Hove and 10 places of interest.

There is a final part to the test which is on the rules and regulations of owning/renting and driving a licensed taxi.

The Route Test

This test is a route drive undertaken with one of the Hackney Carriage Officers. You will be asked to drive to 15 different randomly picked roads within Brighton & Hove, and you must take the most direct and economical route as if you have a paying customer on-board.

Our Driver Knowledge School is open Wednesday and Thursday evenings between 5pm and 8pm. When you enroll, you will be given a set time to come in each week for an hour long one-to-one lesson, during which your tutor will go over what you have learnt and recap on areas learnt in previous lessons to make sure there are no weaknesses or gaps in your knowledge. We also provide mock tests for the Route Driving Test in order to fully prepare you for the final exam.
