Brighton & Hove City Council – Maximum Hackney Carriage Fares

Legal Basis: Section 65 of the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976

  • Fares apply to all hirings within Brighton & Hove City.
  • For journeys ending outside the city area, the fare must not exceed the metered maximum unless a prior agreement is made at the time of hiring.
  • The taximeter will automatically display the correct fare and tariff code.
  • Only extra charges marked with ** may be added to the meter by the driver.

Adur District Council – Hackney Carriage Fares

Legal Basis: Section 65 of the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976

Tariff 1:

  • First 549m (600 yards) or 2m 44s: £2.80
  • Every additional 146m (160 yards) or 44s: £0.20

Surcharges:

  • Tariff 2:
    +£1.00 for trips started between 22:00–06:00 on any day, or on Sundays and Bank Holidays
  • Tariff 3:
    +100% of Tariff 1 for trips starting:

    • 22:00 on 24 Dec – 06:00 on 27 Dec
    • 22:00 on 31 Dec – 10:00 on 1 Jan
  • Extra Passengers (5–8):
    +50% of Tariff 1
  • Soiling/Fouling Charge: £60.00

Important: The taximeter must be activated at the start of every journey. Drivers cannot charge more than the amount displayed.

Changes to the Taxi Tariff

On 10 February 2025, the Council decided to increase the tariff charged by Hackney Carriages as detailed below.

This is a Maximum Charge Tariff & includes VAT where applicable

Tariff 1

  • Start rate: £4.00
  • Each subsequent 70.1 yards or 16 seconds: £0.10
  • Daytime Rate: 06:00 to 23:00 for 1–4 Passengers
  • Applies at all times except when Tariff 2 or 3 applies

Tariff 2

  • Start rate: £5.00
  • Each subsequent 97.2 yards or 30 seconds: £0.20
  • Night Rate: 23:00 to 06:00 for 1–4 Passengers
  • Day Rate (06:00 to 23:00) for 5+ Passengers
  • Bank/Public Holidays for 1–4 Passengers
  • Applies at all times except when Tariff 3 or 4 applies

Tariff 3

  • Start rate: £7.00
  • Each subsequent 76 yards or 18 seconds: £0.20
  • Night Rate (23:00 to 06:00) for 5+ Passengers
  • Bank/Public Holidays for 5+ Passengers
  • Christmas: 20:00 on 24 December to 06:00 on 27 December for 1–4 Passengers
  • New Year: 20:00 on 31 December to 06:00 on 2 January for 1–4 Passengers

Tariff 4

  • Start rate: £8.00
  • Each subsequent 88 yards or 30 seconds: £0.30
  • Christmas: 20:00 on 24 December to 06:00 on 27 December for 5+ Passengers
  • New Year: 20:00 on 31 December to 06:00 on 2 January for 5+ Passengers

Passenger soiling charge shall not exceed: £150
